For Equitable Relief to Eligible Medicare Beneficiaries

April 10, 2017 (Essex Junction, VT) – Age Well’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program highlights a limited-time opportunity for eligible Medicare Beneficiaries. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is currently offering equitable relief to individuals who did not receive the necessary information about Medicare and Vermont Health Connect. This relief would allow beneficiaries to reinstate Medicare Part B medical coverage or relieve their Medicare Part B late penalty in certain circumstances.

Who is eligible? Anyone who did not begin Medicare Part B in their Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) or started Medicare Part B late and have a penalty due to their confusion with Vermont Health Connect insurance may be qualified.

To be eligible for Medicare Part B, you must have premium-free Medicare Part A and not be enrolled in Medicare Part B. To be eligible for late penalty reduction or elimination, the individual must have had a Part B penalty assessed during Medicare General Enrollment Period in 2015, 2016 or 2017.

Equitable Relief is limited to individuals who are or were enrolled in Vermont Health Connect plans and have premium-free Medicare Part A beginning April 1, 2013 through September 30, 2017.

How do I apply for equitable relief? CMS suggests that you contact Social Security Administration with all necessary documentation regarding your Medicare Part B issue and Vermont Health Connect information.  They will review your case and make a decision based on the information presented. If Social Security back dates your Medicare Part B benefit, you will be responsible for the past premiums.
